Swine Flu Update
by Kristi Moore, RN
This is in response to the current outbreak of swine influenza. Although there have been no confirmed cases of swine influenza in Caldwell County at this time, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has recommended for schools to increase education on respiratory hygiene and monitor students for acute respiratory illness.
At Braymer C-4 School, the staff and students are all taught and asked to follow these steps that limit the transmission of infections such as influenza:
- Cover your coughs and sneeze into a tissue or the inside of your elbow, not your bare hands.
- Wash hands frequently, especially after coughing or sneezing.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. The virus can remain on frequently touched objects after an infected person touches it. Others can be infected by touching the doorknob, then rubbing their eyes.
- Stay home if your are sick, especially if you have a fever.
The swine flu is a respiratory disease with symptoms that include: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills and fatigue. If your child develops theses symptoms suddenly, it is recommended to seek medical evaluation. The Caldwell County Health department is currently on 'Active Surveillance' with the Braymer C-4 District to monitor for developing cases. If you have any questions, please contact me at 660-645-4244.
